Maguire favourite to take Wigan job

Australian Michael Maguire has emerged as the likely successor to Brian Noble at Wigan.

The Warriors have called a press conference for Wednesday at the DW Stadium, where the Melbourne Storm assistant is expected to be unveiled as their new head coach if he arrives in time.

Noble's contract runs out next month and chairman Ian Lenagan confirmed after Saturday's season-ending 14-10 play-off defeat at St Helens that he was not being offered a new deal.

Melbourne head coach Craig Bellamy, speaking in the wake of Storm's NRL Grand Final triumph, said the club were resigned to losing Maguire, who in turn confirmed he had spoken with Wigan.

Bellamy has consistently expressed surprise that Maguire has not already been snapped up by a rival NRL club and all but implored Wigan to give Maguire the head coach's job he craves.

"I think Michael will certainly go if he gets a visa," Bellamy told www.nrl.com.

"He has done a great job for us. He is a very talented coach and he thinks he is ready for a head coach's job, and I think he is too.

"That is what he wants to do and he'll certainly get the blessing from our club, without a doubt."

Current Wigan reserves coach Shaun Wane, a former Wigan and Great Britain prop, is also in the running but is more likely to be appointed Maguire's assistant.

New Zealand national coach Stephen Kearney, another of Bellamy's assistants at Melbourne, revealed earlier this year that he turned down the chance to become Wigan's next coach.
