Mallinder makes Saints move

Northampton have appointed Jim Mallinder as the club's new director of rugby.

Mallinder has signed a three-year contract and will be assisted at Franklin's Gardens by Dorian West.

The pair led the England Saxons to victory in the Barclays Churchill Cup at Twickenham last weekend.

Following Northampton's request, the Rugby Football Union have granted Mallinder and West early release from their positions at the national academy.

With Mallinder taking up his post immediately, acting head coach Peter Sloane will leave the club.

Northampton were in the market for a new director of rugby after Paul Grayson was moved to backs and skills coach following the Saints' relegation from the Guinness Premiership.

Saints chief executive Allan Robson said: "We could not have wished for a better response to our decision to appoint a director of rugby, with applicants from both the northern and southern hemispheres.

"Forming a shortlist from such an excellent selection of coaches was difficult in itself, and we interviewed several people whom the board believed would do a good job.

"We placed a good deal of emphasis not only on the ability to create an immediate impact on current performances, but also on the longer-term development of the young English talent at the club.

"And the board were unanimous in their opinion that Jim and Dorian have the right credentials for the job."
