Mascarenhas receives England call

Hampshire all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas has been added to the England one-day squad as cover for injury doubt Luke Wright.

Wright was hit on the toe while batting against a bowling machine at the National Cricket Performance centre in Loughborough on Monday morning and had to have stitches in his left foot.

Mascarenhas will link up with the squad tonight ahead of the fifth NatWest one-day international against Australia at Trent Bridge.

Despite the short notice Mascarenhas - who has 18 ODI and 14 Twenty20 caps to his name - could find himself pitched straight into action if Wright is not passed fit.

With fellow all-rounder Paul Collingwood rested for the Nottingham leg of the one-day tour, Wright's potential absence would leave England desperately short in that area.

Having previously been used as an attacking opening batsman by his country, Wright was moved down to number seven at the start of this series to give England a big hitter in the lower order.

Mascarenhas would be a like-for-like replacement in that role, having memorably struck Yuvraj Singh for five sixes in an over in 2007.

Although born in Chiswick, the 31-year-old was raised in Perth and has faced Australia just once before in international cricket, during the inaugural World Twenty20 two years ago.

England trail 4-0 in the seven-match series with three games to play.
