Mascherano lifted by Euro rout

Javier Mascherano is hoping the momentum from Liverpool's Champions League demolition of Marseille will enable them to topple Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool are in buoyant mood after the 4-0 win in midweek and are now eyeing United's scalp.

"We know we can get a victory and and our confidence is obviously high as well," Mascherano told www.uefa.com. "When you win 4-0 away it's very good for the team and now we need a repeat of this performance on Sunday."

He added: "We're close to the top so we need to win on Sunday to get even closer plus it's very important for our fans that we get a victory. Liverpool against United is a massive game, maybe the biggest there is in England."

The Argentina international midfielder looked in some discomfort during the Marseille match, which Liverpool had to win to book a place in the knockout stages, but expects to be fit to face United.

"I got a kick but I think it's nothing and I should be okay," he said.

Xabi Alonso is set to return to the squad after a two-month absence with a metatarsal injury.

The Spain midfielder has featured in only six Barclays Premier League games and been out of action since the Arsenal match in October.

Steve Finnan is doubtful because of a calf problem while Daniel Agger remains sidelined with a foot injury.
