Mason may make Wigan move

Wigan have emerged as a potential destination for disgruntled Australian Test forward Willie Mason, according to reports in Sydney.

Mason is up for grabs after a public fall-out with Canterbury Bulldogs and is in talks with rival NRL clubs Sydney Roosters, Cronulla and St George Illawarra.

Hull, who also made an offer, have given up hope of luring him to England but, according to the Sydney Sunday Telegraph, Mason is being tempted by the offer of a £1.5million three-year deal from new Wigan owner Ian Lenagan.

The stumbling block is that a move to England would mean Mason having to sacrifice representative football.

"The World Cup is next year and I really want to be part of that," Mason told the newspaper.

"Wigan is a strong club over there. I'm going to have to really consider that. I don't want it to drag on but this contract I'm looking for is pretty important. I'm 27 now and hopefully it'll set me up for the rest of my career."

The Bulldogs have told Mason he is not welcome when the club resumes pre-season training on Monday, although they have yet to officially release him.
