Mature Button takes win in his stride

Jenson Button took a moment to reflect on only the second victory of his Formula One career, and then said: "This is what I am here to do."

As he spoke, it was slightly surreal as the Brawn GP hospitality area was virtually empty, save for a few people hanging around in the background including his new love, model Jessica Michibata.

He said: "It's weird, surreal in a way because it (winning) feels so normal. That's the weird bit. But then it always does, that's the thing. After my last win in Hungary (2006) it felt normal. This is what I am here to do."

In the middle of the room stood Button, surrounded by a handful of journalists, offering a more reflective perspective on an historic Australian Grand Prix victory and Brawn GP's glorious rise into the headlines.

The 29-year-old, along with team-mate Rubens Barrichello, had just guaranteed themselves a place in Formula One folklore.

The statistics underline their achievement: the first victory for a team on their debut since Wolf in 1977, and the first one-two finish for a new marque since 1954 when legendary five-times champion Juan Manuel Fangio led home Karl Kling for Mercedes in France.

One stat likely to be overlooked is the fact Button's win was the 200th for a British driver in the sport's 59-year history.

Many people would suggest that for a driver as talented as Button, he should have more victories to his name from a career that spans 154 races. The fact it was only his second says much about the situations in which he has found himself, and the cars he has driven, during a chequered past.

Addressing that, he added: "It's obviously taken a long time since the last win, and we're here again, but it's a very different situation.

"It's just as special, but this one is different because we've done it with a car that's very quick. Now we look at the next race thinking we can do the same again, and that has to be the aim."
