Maxwell: Questions need answers

The Scottish Football Association would be required to carry out a feasibility study before the Scottish Executive would consider funding a possible rescue bid for the 2012 European Championships, according to Minister for Communities and Sport, Stewart Maxwell.

Rumours surround the ability of Poland and Ukraine to host the tournament and SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has said he would put Scotland's name forward if there were to be a change of venues.

Maxwell told BBC Radio Scotland that preparatory work would have to be done before the vexed question of funding could be addressed. "There are a few steps before we get to the money," he said.

"Clearly at the moment it has been awarded to Poland and Ukraine but I am aware of the problems that they seem to be facing.

"In principle, we would love the tournament to come to Scotland if the opportunity is there and I would like Scotland to be top of the list to be considered.

"But we would require a feasibility study and we would be happy to work with the SFA on that to make sure we get it done as quickly as possible.

"It is the SFA's decision at the end of the day, they are the governing body of the sport but we would work hand-in-glove with them.

"It would cost money. We have probably got four stadiums in place and we require another four.

"But there are too many questions at the moment before we decide how much money would be required to actually make the bid.

"That's what the feasibility study would do but we would be right behind the SFA to make sure that we could afford it and we could host it with some success."
