Scotland manager George Burley has earmarked the former Scotland captain as a replacement for Steven Pressley, who quit as a member of the backroom team last week.

"I know that George was going to speak with him so I don't know what's happening in that respect," Smith said. "I think he would be a very respected member of the staff but it is up to George Burley himself who he selects."

He added: "George has total autonomy on who he brings in as a coach, and if he wants to bring in Gary, and Gary is happy to come in, then we will go forward on that basis."

Burley is keen to appoint the former Coventry and Leeds manager before Scotland's next game, a friendly against Japan on October 10.

Inverness manager Terry Butcher, Burley's assistant, is unable to make the trip to the Far East because his team have an Irn-Bru First Division match on the same day.
