McCall returns to Bradford

Bradford have confirmed former midfielder Stuart McCall as their new manager.

The Sheffield United assistant boss had been linked with the post since the departure of Colin Todd in February, with veteran defender David Wetherall having been named caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.

But after being overlooked for the Blades job following Neil Warnock's exit, McCall has opted to return to Valley Parade for a third spell in an attempt to haul the club back into League One at the first attempt following this season's relegation.

Chairman Julian Rhodes was thrilled to announce the appointment of McCall, who has always been his first choice.

He told the club's official website: "In light of intense media speculation, I'm delighted to say the new manager is Stuart McCall.

"We weren't going to announce it until early June when he will be unveiled properly but some people have been getting a bit nervous so we thought something should be said. It's out in the open now and everybody can look forward to Stuart returning."

Meanwhile, Wetherall will not be part of 42-year-old McCall's backroom staff and will revert to playing duties.

"People might think I'm putting on a brave face but honestly I've got no issues with that," he told the Telegraph & Argus.

"I will go back exactly to how it was before, although hopefully I will get involved with taking the reserves at some point, but I won't have an official coaching title and that's fine by me. I'm totally relaxed about it and this means I can go back to playing, which I'm very happy to do."
