The Scotland international limped off during the first half of the Barclays Premier League newcomers' 1-0 victory following a tangle of legs with former Leeds player Jacob Burns.
McCarthy told the club's official website: "It was purely an accident but Chris has broken his metatarsal. I don't know how long he's going to be out for but I just know he has broken it and some players heal quicker than others."
The manager added: "Chris has worked his socks off and it's just unfortunate that after the career he has had in the lower leagues we are just going into the Premier League and he breaks his toe.
"It is a big disappointment for him and it is a big disappointment for me as well because we have lost him for a number of weeks."
