McClaren not worrying about his job
05 January 2007
Defeat or even a draw would leave England perilously close to a failure to qualify for the finals of the tournament for the first time since 1984.
Asked about his job being on the line, McClaren said: "I understand why people will be thinking that and asking that but we are not even contemplating that, we are here to win a football match, we are here to prepare, we have done it well so far, we have to finish the job. It is not even an issue for me. I'm just focusing on the game."
The England manager believes that the squad have now regained the confidence that seemed missing in previous games against Croatia, Israel and Andorra.
McClaren is keen to avoid a similar situation to the first half against Andorra when England were mercilessly barracked by their own fans, and he was keen to stress the need for the players - and supporters - to view the match as a whole rather than chase an early goal.
He added: "Patience is the key word, I'll be stressing that to the players and I would stress that to the fans. It might not happen in the first 10-15 minutes; we might have to wait.
"This (Estonia) team are very well organised. For first 20-25 minutes they do put a lot of effort in. It's one of those cases where a big team goes to a smaller team and the smaller team make it very difficult. They do that very well.
"We want to win the game and any top club, any team going away doesn't necessarily go gung-ho for the start. We have to pick a team for 95 minutes not the first 10 or 15."
