McClennan backs clubcall system

The defending champions earned the right to determine the semi-final line-up after finishing top of the table and winning through the first round of play-offs.

"It's created this enormous interest and, if that can help get some extra people watching our wonderful game of rugby league, that's great," said McClennan. "We need more people watching this game because it is the best game going around the world."

St Helens, who were handed a last-four derby clash with Wigan, are among the biggest critics of the new format but McClennan believes the huge amount of interest that surrounded Sunday's announcement at a televised press conference justified the changes.

"At the Rhinos, we're happy to promote our wonderful sport and, whether you like the concept or not shouldn't come into it," he said. "The RFL have come up with this initiative and we respect our governing body so we get on with it."

McClennan's decision to take on the Dragons in Friday's first semi-final at Headingley came as little surprise. The Perpignan club have won just two of nine previous meetings with the Rhinos and have conceded 192 points on four visits to Headingley. However, Kevin Walters' men have run into form at the right time with consecutive away wins over St Helens, Wakefield and Huddersfield.

McClennan insists the champions will treat Catalans with respect and dismisses the theory that being selected will provide the visitors with an even greater incentive.

"I don't buy into the theory that you can get motivated because they think you're weak," he said. "To know you're 80 minutes away from getting to Old Trafford is pretty well good enough motivation."

Wigan coach Brian Noble says he would have been happy with either pairing and, after watching his side impressively despatch Hull KR 30-16 on Saturday, believes they are good enough to reach Old Trafford.

"I think we're playing well," he said. "We're energised and we're healthy. We're ready to play and we're excited about the prospect."
