McClennan never lost faith

Leeds coach Brian McClennan watched his side conjure a late fightback to clinch a famous 32-30 win at Wakefield then claimed he always felt his men would emerge victorious.

Scott Donald touched down in the dying embers of the game to pilfer the points and deny Wakefield a first home win over the reigning champions in almost 17 years.

"I wasn't nervous," said McClennan with a broad grin after seeing his side touch down through Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Keith Senior, Rob Burrow (two), Ali Lauitiiti and Donald. "It was a great comeback and it gives us something to feel proud of. I never felt the game was over and all credit to the guys for keeping going right to the end."

He added: "We feel for Wakefield, of course, and it's a horrible place for them to be right now.

"They had talked about beating us but I'm sure they will make the top eight because they showed a lot of character and skill throughout the match."

Wakefield, for whom scrum-half Danny Brough landed seven goals in an impressive display, were vibrant and will certainly never come closer than this to beating their neighbours.

Crestfallen Wildcats coach John Kear could not hide his disappointment.

His men pushed Leeds all the way and thoroughly deserved their scores from Matt Blaymire, Sam Obst, Scott Grix and Ryan Atkins.

Kear said: "We gave ourselves a great opportunity and were eight points up with three minutes left.

"We shouldn't have come out of the wrong scoreline but we did and we must give credit to Leeds. We all feel as though we should have won but it's how we respond now."
