McClennan relieved after narrow win

Leeds coach Brian McClennan was a relieved man after watching his side fight back from 12-0 down to return to winning ways with a 20-12 triumph over Huddersfield.

A long pass from Huddersfield full-back Brett Hodgson meant for centre Jamahl Lolesi might have snatched the Giants' first win at Headingley for 49 years, but teenage winger Kallum Watkins - deputising for England debutant Ryan Hall - snapped up the interception and raced 90 metres for his second try to secure the victory.

"There was a sense of relief," said McClennan. "It took the pressure off because we were only up by two and they were attacking our line."

He added: "Our execution was down quite a bit. I can't remember how many times we thought we were going to score but didn't quite get there.

"It would have been easy to think it's turning out not to be one of our days. It had that written all over it.

"At least we persisted and hung in there. In a sense that's what makes the way we came back even more appealing. It was a real test of character and a real brave victory by the boys."

The champions missed five clear-cut chances and the normally clinical Scott Donald was to blame for two of them.

"He's had a bad day out there," admitted McClennan. "He's probably not playing as well as he was last year."
