The 22-year-old represented England at Under-21 level but was allowed to switch allegiances due to his Scottish grandfather.
Scotland are in third place in Group B while England, who face Israel on Saturday, are in fourth place in Group E and McEveley said: "It would be magnificent if we made it and they didn't."
McEveley is all set to make his competitive debut against Lithuania in the Euro 2008 qualifier at Hampden on Saturday, and added: "It's nice to see them struggling to be honest with you. But we've got a job in hand and we have to give it our best shot.
"I take stick for being Scottish but thankfully it's died down a bit now as the whole transition came about last year. I'm waiting for the right moment to give them stick back - the right moment would be when they don't qualify and I can phone all my mates and tell them to come and watch me at Euro 2008!
"I was born in England, but I didn't think about nationality really." he added. "I didn't know I was going to be a footballer. I wanted to be one, but you don't know that you'll get there and into the Premier League let alone play international football and have a choice of countries.
"But I always had a feeling for Scotland because of my family, my grandparents and their friends who were all Scottish."
