McGeechan backed for Lions role

Former England coach Andy Robinson believes Ian McGeechan should lead the British Lions on their tour of South Africa in 2009.

Wasps director of rugby McGeechan could return to the role he held in 1989, 1993 and 1997.

Edinburgh coach Robinson described McGeechan as "an outstanding choice" for the position, saying: "I think he's a quality coach. His depth of knowledge and understanding of the game in all its facets - attack, defence, set-piece - is just phenomenal."

Meanwhile, Scotland coach Frank Hadden has revealed he could have a role to play with the Lions in two years' time.

He added: "I have been asked if I am available for the Lions, and of course I am. It would be an honour to be involved."

The role of tour manager for the three-Test series against the Springboks has been filled by Wales legend Gerald Davies, while Scot Andy Irvine was this week named as chairman of the Lions board.
