McGugan seals Forest promotion

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan scored the decisive goal in a 3-2 victory over Yeovil which ensured his side clinched promotion to the Coca-Cola Championship.

Julian Bennett opened the scoring for Forest with a long-range strike in the 12th minute and Kris Commons doubled the advantage with a goal from the edge of the penalty area six minutes later.

Yeovil midfielder Jaime Peters pulled a goal back in the 20th minute at the City Ground but McGugan restored the two-goal cushion in the 28th minute with a superb free-kick before Andy Kirk claimed a second for the visitors.

Colin Calderwood's outfit stole the League One runners-up spot after Doncaster slipped to a 2-1 defeat against a Cheltenham side who needed victory to be certain of avoiding relegation.

The Robins took the lead in the 24th minute through Steven Gillespie at Whaddon Road before Paul Green levelled for Rovers in the 76th minute. But Paul Connor grabbed the winner in the 85th minute to ensure his side remained in the division and Doncaster will go into the play-offs.

That result meant Bournemouth, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Carlisle, were relegated to League Two along with Gillingham.

Scott Dobie's 57th-minute opener was cancelled out by Brett Pitman in the 68th minute which meant that the Cumbrians will now have to win promotion through the play-offs.

Gillingham's fate was sealed after they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Leeds with the Yorkshire outfit also in the play-offs after their 15-point appeal was rejected during the week.

The Gills had taken the lead through Simeon Jackson in the 20th minute but goals from Bradley Johnson (69) and Tresor Kandol (88) saw Gary McAllister's side claim the points.
