McIlroy struggles on second day

Northern Ireland amateur Rory McIlroy's hopes of emulating Justin Rose's Open Championship heroics nose-dived on the second day's play at Carnoustie.

McIlroy almost stole the show from first-round leader Sergio Garcia with a three-under 68, the only player in the 156-strong field not to card a single bogey.

However, a first bogey of the championship was soon on his card and although a birdie on the fourth repaired the damage, the former European amateur champion bogeyed the fifth, three-putted the sixth for par and recorded a double-bogey on the ninth.

He is five shots behind Garcia, who had opened with three pars before three-putting the fourth for a bogey.

Garcia, whose opening 65 was an amazing 24 shots better than his first round here in 1999, was one ahead of American Jim Furyk, who picked up four birdies in the first seven holes to be out in 33.

Furyk then bogeyed the 10th despite a stroke of luck when his errant second shot bounced back off the railing on a bridge over the Barry Burn. From an awkward stance around the base of a tree the former US Open champion was only able to chip to 20ft and missed the par putt.

He quickly made amends with another birdie from five feet on the 11th to get back to four under, alongside Ireland's Paul McGinley, who was not due to start his second round until 3.15pm.
