McManus: Hoops must raise game

Celtic captain Stephen McManus insists the Parkhead side need to improve upon Saturday's demolition of Hearts if they are to negotiate their way past Spartak Moscow on Wednesday.

Celtic hammered Hearts 5-0 at home to give them a boost ahead of the visit of the Russian club but the 24-year-old McManus believes even more quality will be required on Wednesday.

The SPL champions drew 1-1 in the Luzhniki Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie, and McManus said: "We're only four or so games into the season, we've got a million miles to go and we are looking to improve the whole time."

He added: "We have chopped and changed but it's because we've got so many good players who are in the side or are trying to get in the side.

"The thing for us is to keep clean sheets and it was nice for us to keep a clean sheet again against Hearts.

"But I think we need to go up a gear against Moscow. It's important when you go into a Champions League game you go up a level, because if you don't you'll get punished.

"We did all right in Russia and gave ourselves a chance but one thing is for sure - they will be coming here with the attitude that they can win.

"I think it's important that you get a fast start and get right into them. Then we'll see how it goes. The good thing is we know we're more than capable of going to that next level."
