Meadows cool over possible medal upgrade

Jenny Meadows insists she is not sitting by the phone waiting to hear if she will be upgraded to a World Championship silver medal.

Meadows finished third in the 800metres in Berlin this month but may be awarded silver following the gender investigation into champion Caster Semenya, of South Africa. In the immediate aftermath of her run in the Olympic Stadium, Meadows - who finished just 0.03seconds behind Kenya's Janeth Jepkosgei in second - said she did not want silver because she would be "haunted forever" by being so close to gold.

But after finishing third in the 800m at the Aviva Grand Prix in Gateshead on Monday, Meadows admitted: "I would be delighted for myself if something happened, but I've not heard anything and I'm certainly not sat by the phone."

The 28-year-old from Wigan added: "Some of the girls (in Berlin) were saying she (Semenya) wouldn't run in the final, but I had to put that to the back of my mind. It's been an unfortunate situation for everybody really."

It remains to be seen when or if Semenya runs again, although she could face Meadows in the World Athletics Final in Greece in mid-September if the IAAF give her a wild card.

Meadows reported her exploits in the German capital had taken their toll, after finishing third behind British team-mate Jemma Simpson and America's surprise winner Christy Wurth-Thomas.

"I ran the race of my life 12 days ago, and it's been a tough week," said Meadows. "I've been run down and ill with swollen glands and a cold - and on Friday I didn't think I was going to be able to make it. But I really wanted to be here and I'm relieved to finish in the top three. It's as good as I could have hoped for."

All four of Britain's individual medallists competed in Gateshead, heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis only fifth in the 100m hurdles in 13.28secs but Lisa Dobriskey and Phillips Idowu winning the 1500m and triple jump respectively.

Silver medallist Dobriskey, who broke four minutes in Zurich on Friday, won a much slower race in windy conditions but finally looked to have got her tactics right.
