Chambers clocked a lifetime best of 6.54 seconds to claim a share of second place with former world 100m champion Kim Collins behind Nigeria's Olusoji Fasuba.

"This has been my gold medal and the taste of competition is now back," said Chambers. "I will be going to bed with a smile on my face after the nightmare I have been through."

Chambers' victory at the UK trials in Sheffield meant UK Athletics reluctantly had to select him for these Championships despite his two-year ban after testing positive for the banned steroid THG, and he insists his silver medal success is very sweet indeed as he weighs up whether to challenge the British Olympic Association's rules which ban drug cheats from ever competing in future Games.

"I'm very pleased as it was a very tough line-up and a very tough race," he continued.

"I am pleased to be able to compete against these guys and I wish them luck for the summer. It means everything to me, I can feel good about myself.

"Running is what I do best and all I wanted to do was run here."

UKA chief executive Niels de Vos insists his organisation are still looking to ensure they never find themselves in the same position again where they are forced to select an athlete with a doping offence to their name.

"This is obviously a spectacular personal success for Dwain which has shown that he is one of the most naturally gifted sprinters in the world," he said.

"His success and his welcome public commitment to drug-free sport does not alter our commitment to review our policy towards athletes returning from a drugs ban, in line with the changing policies of others within the world of athletics."
