Megson grateful as Stelios saves day

Gary Megson expressed his delight at Stelios Giannakopoulos grabbing a stoppage-time equaliser against Aris Salonika to keep Bolton's UEFA Cup dream alive on Thursday night.

The Greece winger swept home a cross from substitute Mikel Alonso to stun his fellow countrymen at the Reebok Stadium.

Bolton boss Megson said: "He has a knack of being in the right place at the right time. He has come up and saved us."

Aris looked to be heading to victory in this group game thanks to a goal a minute before half-time from Spanish forward Calvo.

But Bolton responded and go to Belgrade next Thursday, knowing victory against Red Star will surely seem them progress.

"We thought Stelios would be right up for the game, because we were playing a Greek team," Megson said.

"He is quite versatile. But when you have the standard of squad like we have, there is competition all over the place.

"It is a fact of life at this level. But there is no one here who is out with the washing.

"People may not have started as much as they would like. But it doesn't mean there have been any pre-conceived ideas about who will or who won't play.

"It is purely and simply down to form and what we see on training pitch," he added.
