Megson irked by officials
07 January 2008
Megson accused referee Alon Yefet and fourth official Eitan Tabrizi of not knowing the rules, in particular labelling the latter "a doughnut".
Megson said: "You are allowed to stand up and try and work on behalf of your football club. You don't have to sit down like a dummy all the time."
Yefet should have reduced Sporting to 10 men in the 14th minute of the last-16 first-leg tie at the Reebok Stadium, but ignored a deliberate handball outside the area by goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
The incident also left Heidar Helguson severely winded as he was kneed in the chest by Patricio in a challenge for a 50-50 ball.
But it was the fact Yefet failed to dismiss Patricio for the handball that irked Megson, who was also involved in a battle with Tabrizi as he tried to shout instructions from the technical area.
He added: "Whether it's a sending off is up to the referee, but the rules are if you handle outside the box you get sent off - and he (Patricio) did well because he got both hands on it!" said Megson.
"As for the fourth official, he's a doughnut. He didn't know the rules. He didn't know the rules, so we got him a copy, but it still didn't seem to matter.
"It would have been better if they knew the rules on the pitch, though, rather than relating to chuffing dug-outs because the lad handled the ball with both hands outside the box.
"He shouldn't have been on the pitch, but then I don't think the game was particularly well officiated. I don't normally come out and criticise, but I think he (the referee) fell for one or two things."
