Megson: Matt Taylor-made for England

Bolton manager Gary Megson believes Matt Taylor could be ready to step up to the international stage with England.

The 27-year-old midfielder helped steer his team to a 2-1 victory against his former club Portsmouth at the Reebok Stadium.

"Matt's set-piece delivery is second to none, he tucks in, does his bit defensively and gets forward," said Megson. "You do not like pushing people forward but if England are looking for someone in what is a problem area they could do worse than look at at Matt."

He added: "He works his socks off and it was a really good performance by him. He has really settled down and added goals to his game."

Gardner's goal was also explosive after he had been set up by the industrious Taylor following another quick counter-attack.

Crouch, however, took his tally for the Premier League season to eight when he headed in a delightful cross from Niko Krancjar.

Portsmouth manager Tony Adams decided to give a run-out in the second half to Lassana Diarra even though they have accepted a bid from Real Madrid for the midfielder.

Adams explained: "Lassana is still our player and he remains committed to the club.

"He is a great guy, a great professional, who wants to play and train. He wanted to be in the squad.

"He is negotiating personal terms with Real after we agreed a fee with them. But I still needed him on the pitch."
