Miley all smiles

Hannah Miley became a double national champion by adding the 400 metres individual medley title to her 200m crown at the Olympic trials in Sheffield.

Miley set a new European record of 4mins 33.24secs in the heats to elevate herself to second in the world this year behind Stephanie Rice, who set a new world record in the Australian Olympic trials.

Keri-Anne Payne had beaten Miley's British record on Saturday night before the Scot reclaimed it in the next heat and on Sunday morning those two swimmers finished well clear of the field, with Miley pulling away on the second length of the final leg, the freestyle.

Miley finished in 4:37.41 with Payne second in 4:38.40.

The 18-year-old admitted it had been tough to return after Saturday night's exploits, saying: "Hopefully I will be able to perfect it in Beijing, going from heat to final.

"I was hoping to go not far off my 4:33 but that was just such a standard - it blew me away, I still can't believe it.

"I just wanted to make sure I qualified."

The Garioch swimmer trains in a 25-metre pool and is coached by her father Patrick, and Miley feels her situation underlines you do not have to have world-class facilities to succeed.

"We have come a long way," she said. "It shows you don't have to have the best facilities in the world to do the best.

"You can do it anyway."
