Millennium Stadium inspires Wellens
06 January 2007
The champions roared back to the top of the Super League thanks to a 34-18 win over arch-rivals Wigan.
Wellens said: "A stadium like this brings out the best in players. It's a fantastic arena and, despite being half full, the noise was tremendous."
The reigning Man of Steel, who was a tryscorer in St Helens' 32-14 Challenge Cup final win over Wigan at the Millennium Stadium in 2004, took his tally to 12 in the last five games.
Wellens added: "We were sloppy in a few areas, so that is something we can work on in the coming weeks."
Wellens scored two first first-half tries, to supplement others from Francis Meli and Matt Gidley, as Saints built up a 22-6 interval lead.
The Great Britain full-back completed his hat-trick five minutes into the second half and grabbed his fourth on the hour.
"I thought Paul Wellens was brilliant," admitted Wigan coach Brian Noble. "He showed what a world-class player he is."
St Helens coach Daniel Anderson said: "He was absolutely superb and once again was fantastic at finishing but he is the first to admit he can't win games by himself. A lot of blokes made significant contributions. Francis Meli is on fire at the moment."
