Miller: Collingwood and Bell are safe

The positions of under-fire England batsmen Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell are "not under threat" according to national selector Geoff Miller.

Despite combining to clinch England's amazing victory in the second Test against New Zealand at Old Trafford last month, the places of the duo in the batting order have been questioned after a largely unproductive summer.

But after naming an unchanged side for the third and final Test against the Kiwis, Miller told Sky Sports News: "They're not under threat, we know what their qualities are and they're averaging big scores in Test cricket,"

He added: "It (England's form) is far from disastrous, we've just won three Tests out of four and we want to go on and win at Trent Bridge. It's vital to keep the momentum going for the future."

Injuries suffered by Andrew Flintoff and Matthew Hoggard this summer have helped to avert potentially difficult decisions for the selection panel.

But Miller insists he is not dreading the pair's return to fitness.

"These are terrific decisions, when there's pressure from quality players," he said.

"As long as they (the omitted players) know where we're coming from we're quite happy with that.

"We want a size of squad to compete with the best in the world."
