Mize repairs early damage

Fifty-year-old Larry Mize did not make the start he was looking for on his return to Augusta National today - but then came up with a brilliant response.

Winner of The Masters way back in 1987 with a never-to-be-forgotten chip-in to deny Greg Norman, Mize had opened the 2009 tournament with a five-under-par 67 to be in joint fourth place.

From two behind Chad Campbell, however, he went four adrift with an opening double-bogey six - but then birdied the next two holes to repair the damage.

First of the European contingent back on the course was England's Ian Poulter and he parred the first to remain one under.

In the group behind, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell, five under on his debut until he bogeyed the last two holes of his first round, also resumed with a par four.
