Monflis carries French hopes

Gael Monfils ensured there would be home representation in the French Open quarter-finals after winning in four sets against 28th seed Ivan Ljubicic on Monday.

Unseeded Monfils was among five Frenchmen to reach the fourth round but the world number 59 will be alone in flying the Tricolour in the last eight after posting a 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-3 6-2 triumph against his Croatian opponent.

The 21-year-old, who broke Ljubicic five times and sent down 12 aces in an assured display, booked his place in the quarter-finals of a grand slam tournament for the first time with this win.

Roger Federer's bid to win the French Open for the first time continues apace but he was made to battle every inch of the way as he posted an impressive victory over home favourite Julien Benneteau.

The world number one triumphed in straight sets but the statistics only tell half the story as Benneteau, the world number 55, time and again thrilled the partisan crowd on Philippe Chatrier Court with a raft of bullying groundstrokes and crisp winners.

Despite his best efforts, however, the Frenchman had no answer to the all-round game of Federer, who posted a 6-4 7-5 7-5 triumph in an entertaining encounter that lasted two hours and 26 minutes.

Fernando Gonzalez continued his unbeaten run on clay in 2008 to set up a last-eight clash with Federer.

The Chilean, seeded 24 at Roland Garros, improved his record on clay to 16-0 for the season with a routine 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-1 win over unseeded American Robby Ginepri.

Spain's David Ferrer completed the quarter-final line-up after emerging on top from a see-saw tussle with 21st seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.

The fifth seed trailed by two sets to one at one stage but got his game together when it mattered most to register a thrilling 4-6 6-2 1-6 6-3 6-3 win on Suzanne Lenglen Court. The 26-year-old will meet Monfils in the last eight.
