India went 1-0 up at Trent Bridge but England made them work hard for their victory, with Chris Tremlett claiming three wickets on the last day as the tourists chased a modest target of 73.

Panesar said: "We got three wickets in the second innings as they chased a small target in the last Test and we will be trying to put an emphasis on that. We wanted to get a positive result out of that situation and we got a few of their wickets."

The last time England were beaten in a home Test series was way back in the 2001 Ashes. England came within one wicket of taking a 1-0 series lead at Lord's but, having lost at Trent Bridge, they now find themselves heading to the Oval in need of a victory.

England came from 1-0 down to secure a draw in India 18 months ago and Panesar is confident they can repeat that feat on home soil.

"In the Lord's Test we needed one wicket to win and there was some positive cricket played. Maybe the man upstairs didn't want us to win and the clouds came," he said.

"These things happen in cricket and then in the second Test India played very well. It will be tough this week but if we play the cricket we have been we have a chance to do well."

England were accused of using over-aggressive tactics in the last game, highlighted by the now infamous jelly bean affair.

Panesar insists England played within the spirit of the game and vowed they would not be softening their approach at the Oval.

"We all want to see cricket played in the right spirit and that is what happened," said Panesar. "You want to be competitive but you need to play the game in the right spirit, which is important."
