Monty: Lyle jibe helped me focus
20 January 2009
Lyle, overlooked for the job earlier this year, hit the headlines at The Open by saying Montgomerie had been guilty of "a form of what you would call cheating" when he took a wrong drop in Indonesia four years ago.
Montgomerie admitted that it had been "a difficult time", but said: "It made me more determined to do this and win this."
Three years ago Ian Woosnam admitted he had been prepared to quit after Thomas Bjorn, not given a wild card, called him "the most pathetic captain I've ever seen".
Woosnam went on to lead Europe to a record-equalling nine-point victory at The K Club near Dublin, but later revealed: "All it would have needed was for my players to show the slightest reservation about my captaincy and I would have walked. That's why I got them around a table and asked them."
Montgomerie was instrumental in Lyle not being fined for his comments - Bjorn was - and added he was "glad that it's laid to rest".
