Monty makes up for Hoggard injury

Monty Panesar kept England's victory hopes high with four West Indies wickets on the third day of the first Test at Lord's.

Panesar (four for 52) was rewarded for his control and know how with three lbw decisions and one clean-bowled success as the tourists responded to England's 553 for five declared with 217 for five by tea.

England's pace attack had to toil away in the absence of frontline seamer Matthew Hoggard, off the field since shortly before lunch with a thigh strain.

The hosts were therefore thankful for the presence of left-arm orthodox Panesar, not just for his wicket-taking ability but for wheeling through 17 overs unchanged from the Nursery End.

After West Indies openers Daren Ganga and Chris Gayle had dug in for most of the first hour this morning, it was Liam Plunkett who succeeded where Hoggard and his new-ball partner Steve Harmison failed. The first change struck with only his second delivery, knocking over Gayle's off-stump with a yorker as the left-hander aimed erroneously to leg.

But it was all about Panesar from the moment he bowled number three Devon Smith just before lunch, with his first delivery - one which turned just marginally, and clearly not as much as the left-hander was anticipating as he played inside the line.

Ramnaresh Sarwan appeared to be extending West Indies' hopes of saving the match, in a third-wicket stand of 68 with Ganga, but went lbw pushing forward and missing a straight-on delivery from Panesar.

Opener Ganga was just one run short of what would have been a painstaking 50 when Panesar had him lbw too, umpire Asad Rauf again correctly deciding a delivery which struck the batsman in line would have gone on to hit the stumps.

Plunkett would have had a second wicket, however, had Paul Collingwood managed to hang on to a tough second-slip chance above his head - offered by Runako Morton on one.

The miss did not prove costly, because Panesar had another action-replay lbw up his sleeve - Morton missing this time, and Rauf brave enough to give another positive verdict.
