Monty the man for resurgent England

Monty Panesar claimed international-best figures to revive England's hopes of winning the second npower Test against New Zealand.

Left-arm spinner Panesar took six for 37 as the New Zealanders capitulated for just 114 in their second innings at Old Trafford.

That left England with a daunting victory target of 294 but they chipped 76 off that target for the loss of opener Alastair Cook, who was taken at short-leg via bat and thigh pad off Daniel Vettori.

Panesar's spell saw him break the 100-wicket barrier in Tests when he spun one to defeat first-innings centurion Ross Taylor, and enjoyed similar success to that of New Zealand counterpart Vettori (five for 66) earlier in the day.

While Vettori was a constant threat to the outside edge, Panesar's ability to straighten the ball from the line of the stumps resulted in four leg-before-wicket dismissals among his half-dozen victims.

Ryan Sidebottom also chipped in with a couple as the Black Caps - without Daniel Flynn in the aftermath of his blow in the face batting first time around - failed to develop a useful start.

The same could have been said of England, who resumed the third morning trailing by 229 runs on 152 for four, but capitulated to 202 all out after losing six wickets for 42 runs in 103 balls.

As last man Jimmy Anderson walked out to bat, England were still three runs short of saving the follow-on but fortunately Stuart Broad demonstrated his composure with an aggressive 30.

The Kiwis were in total command at 85 for two in their second innings but the heroics of Panesar gave England hope.

Cook was the only England batsman to be dismissed in the evening session and Andrew Strauss (27 not out) and captain Michael Vaughan (12 no) will resume on Monday morning with plenty of work to do.
