Moores backed by bosses

David Collier insists new England coach Peter Moores has made a positive impact since his appointment, despite the Test defeat to Sri Lanka.

Although the side have again performed admirably in one-day cricket this season, beating India and Sri Lanka since Moores took over on May 1, another disappointing Test outing followed. Michael Vaughan's men suffered a 1-0 loss to Sri Lanka in a three-match series, with only the weather preventing defeat in the third and final Test.

Yet, England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Collier is optimistic former Academy director Moores is the man to revive the nation's Test fortunes. "We can't expect instant results," Collier said on BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

He added: "It was his first tour to Sri Lanka, and he will learn a lot in terms of getting to know the players.

"But he has made an impact, and a lot of people have noticed several changes, and significant changes.

"Peter has just appointed a new fielding coach in Richard Halsall who will start work in March.

"Those sort of innovations are how we need to progress and move forward if we are to become one of the top two or three nations in the world, regain those Ashes and win an overseas tournament."

Collier appreciates that while England's Test results this year have again been "very disappointing", at least progress is now being made in the one-day arena.

"Earlier in the year, we went to Australia and for the first time in 20 years we won a one-day series there," he said. "That was followed by the win over India, and then, for the first time in more than 20 years, a win on the sub-continent over Sri Lanka.

"Clearly, we had a disappointing World Cup, so it's slow progress with the one-day side, but something to build on for the future and for the Champions Trophy coming up in 2008."
