Moores hints at Swann Test place

Graeme Swann will sit out the final one-day international against Sri Lanka having been reassured he is almost certain to earn a return visit with England's Test squad next month.

The Nottinghamshire off-spinner has been ruled out of the match at the Premadasa Stadium after tearing his left hamstring in Wednesday's series-clinching victory at the same venue, and denies him another opportunity to impress before England reveal their squad for the three-Test series.

But Moores said: "He's had a really good trip and the key for him now is he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps doing the work that got him there and like most things, the rest will look after itself. He couldn't have done much more to put himself strongly in the frame - he was probably strongly in the frame even before he came here, but he's done very well."

He added: "It's a shame for Graeme because he's had a really good series and he'd be one of the players I'd have thought who'd have been in with a chance of man of the series.

"He's bowled beautifully. He's probably been the most aggressive spinner on show in both teams, he's turned the ball more than most and he's taken his opportunities to dominate when he can and that, to me, has been really promising."

Swann's place is expected to be taken by Monty Panesar, who was overlooked for the first four matches because of his rival's superior ability in the field and with the bat.

But Moores is confident Panesar still has a role to play in one-day international cricket, although he accepts he is more developed as a Test match player at present.
