Morgan hails battling Rovers

Justin Morgan highlighted the spirit shown by his Hull Kingston Rovers side as they hung on to take a thrilling Humberside derby 18-14 against their bitter rivals Hull FC at the KC Stadium.

The Robins appeared to be coasting towards a sixth win in nine engage Super League meetings between the two after tries from Jake Webster, Paul Cooke and Peter Fox gave them an 18-4 lead midway through the second half. But the home side fought back in a rip-roaring finale that saw both sides make a number of errors before Rovers eventually emerged as the victors.

"What a great game of rugby league," assessed Morgan. "Not technically classical but both teams had a massive crack out there."

He added: "Our execution was poor, we dropped more ball than I have seen us drop all year but I thought we showed something that you don't learn on the training pitch or in video sessions and that's spirit and determination and I thought we were excellent in that regard.

"We've worked really hard on that, it's a cornerstone to any success. At times I was disappointed, some of our principles and philosophies went out the window, but we scrambled really well and they had plenty of good field position in the second half but couldn't convert."

Hull coach Richard Agar was left to rue what might have been as he saw his side slump to a fourth straight defeat despite their late comeback.

Their form is in stark contrast to the way they started the season - winning their first five games - and they now find themselves behind Hull KR in the table and out of the Challenge Cup after last weekend's defeat by Salford.

But Agar is adamant his side are not falling short by too great a distance.

He said: "When you look at games (we have lost), we have scored more tries (than the opposition), scored equal tries and missed a few kicks.

"I don't think there is much in it, it's a fine line that some weeks there are one or two plays that you can ride out and the momentum goes for you and another week you get stung."
