Morgan pays tribute to defence

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan paid tribute to his team's defensive heroics after they ground out a thrilling 20-12 win at Wigan to go top of the engage Super League.

Rovers trailed until the final seconds of the first half when Michael Dobson scored a controversial try and did not take the lead until Jake Webster's try on 56 minutes. They then had to defend under intense pressure in the final quarter from their hosts until Dobson's last-minute drop goal enabled them to breath easier and take top spot.

"To be honest, it's not something we spoke about after the game," he said. "We spoke about the gutsy performance. It's just two points and means that nobody can get past us at the moment. It doesn't matter where we are in the table, we just need to keep going."

He added: "At the moment our concentration levels are good and we are learning how to win games without being great.

"Previously we had to be close to our best and execute almost perfectly to win but we've developed a willingness to grind games out when things aren't going well for us."

Rovers lost second rower Stanley Gene after 30 minutes with an ankle injury and substitute forward Jason Netherton went off in the second half with a cut knee, leaving Morgan with depleted resources.

"That makes it even more rewarding, having that adversity thrown at us," added Morgan.

"We had to battle exceptionally hard. The conditions were not conducive for great rugby league and there were lots of mistakes from both teams.

"Defensively we were very good, especially on our own line. We had to defend huge amounts of minutes but we came up with a spirited effort.

"I asked for that and certainly got it. The guts and determination we showed defensively was first class."
