Stanley Gene's try four minutes from time ensured Rovers won for the second successive meeting at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.
"It was mission accomplished, but it wasn't the manner we hoped for," he said. "Guts and determination got us through in the end."
He added: "We wanted to come here and get the points and we did that.
"We were poor and predictable in the first half but we corrected things in the second half, but I still don't think we were very good.
"To the players' credit they responded to what we spoke about at half-time. There wasn't a lot of brains out there, but there was a lot of ticker."
Catalans coach Mick Potter paid tribute to the visitors and tipped them to finish in the play-offs.
Potter blamed his side for their inability to turn attacking opportunities into points, but was happy with his side's performance.
"I'm disappointed with the result, I thought we were right in the game," said Potter. "I think Rovers can finish in the top six and if we can convert a little better we might be able to climb the table with them.
"Hull KR are a good team and they managed this win without some key players. We didn't control the ruck like we wanted to and Rovers deserved the win."
