Morgan to be new ICC president

ECB chairman David Morgan has been confirmed as the new president of the International Cricket Council.

The appointment of Morgan, a former chairman of Glamorgan, was announced at a press conference at the Brit Oval on Friday afternoon.

Ray Mali has been acting president since Sonn's death and he will vacate his post next May when Morgan will replace him.

It means Morgan be in charge at the time of major events such as the 2009 Ashes series and the Twenty20 World Championship in England later in the same year.

Morgan is the first ECB representative to hold the prestigious role but it also means a successor will need to be found for him in his present role.

He succeeded Lord MacLaurin as ECB chairman in 2003 and oversaw controversial events like England's tour to Zimbabwe in 2004 and the decision to allow television rights of domestic cricket be sold to Sky TV rather than a terrestrial station.

David Collier, who will be instrumental in finding Morgan's successor, congratulated Morgan upon hearing the news.

He said: "On behalf of everyone at ECB, our members and cricket followers throughout England and Wales, I extend my warmest congratulations to David Morgan on his unanimous election as President elect of the International Cricket Council.

"David was instrumental in establishing and streamlining the governance of ECB.

"He is an extremely popular leader of cricket in England and Wales, and the world game has chosen a gentleman with great vision whose skills will be of major benefit to the cricket world."
