Mosley wins confidence vote

Max Mosley is to remain in office as president of the FIA after comfortably winning a vote of confidence in Paris.

Following a two-hour discussion, during which frank views were exchanged regarding the 68-year-old, Mosley was understood to be delighted after the result was announced at the FIA headquarters.

There were 103 votes in favour of Mosley, 55 against, with seven abstentions and four null papers.

Mosley hit the headlines a little more than two months ago following lurid revelations into his private life, which were published in the News of the World.

That resulted in Tuesday's crisis meeting for Mosley, who has maintained a low profile since the scandal broke and avoided the media again as he took a back route into the FIA headquarters.

Mosley's reign stands at 15 years - and his current mandate is due to expire in October next year.

Up until a week ago, it was believed Mosley would comfortably win the day.

However, a significant number of automobile clubs - representing 13% of the vote - joined forces and called on him to resign.

As has been his staunch position since day one, Mosley refused to do so, even ignoring a late plea from Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone to fall on his sword.

And he was able put forward a powerful argument as to why he should stay at the meeting in the French capital.
