Mowbray confident in Carson

West Brom manager Tony Mowbray claims Scott Carson is not suffering from a crisis of confidence even though the England keeper is facing relegation from the Barclays Premier League for the second time in three seasons.

And Mowbray is confident he can improve Carson - left out of the England squad by Fabio Capello for the forthcoming internationals with Slovakia and Ukraine - as a player if he is willing to learn and develop.

"I don't think Scott is suffering from any lack of confidence. He understands our team and the way we play and he gets on with it," Mowbray told PA Sport.

"He makes good saves," he added. "We are trying to stamp our own print on Scott as a goalkeeper really and change a few things about our game.

"Like all the outfield players, he is trying to take them on board. Sometimes you've got to overcome a bit of resistance to some of the things you ask them to do. Yet, if he keeps persevering, I'd like to think we can improve him as a goalkeeper."

Carson was part of the Charlton team which went down from the top flight at the end of the 2006-2007 campaign when on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

Meanwhile, defender Carl Hoefkens admits "chances are high" he will leave at the end of the season if the Baggies are relegated.

The Baggies are bottom of the Barclays Premier League and eight points from safety after the weekend's 1-1 draw with Bolton.

"If we are relegated, the chances are high that I leave the club," Hoefkens told www.Sporza.be. "We had a bad weekend with the draw against Bolton because the teams close to us won.

"We should not give up, but that will not be easy. I was expecting more (this season) but we can only blame ourselves because our ranking is due to our mistakes. We have made a number of stupid defensive mistakes and lost many games."
