Moyes: Anichebe must play the part
06 January 2008
With Ayegbeni Yakubu and James Vaughan out for the rest of the season, and Louis Saha struggling with a hamstring problem, the 20-year-old is Everton's only fit recognised centre-forward. And Moyes believes the Nigerian youngster should seize his chance - starting against Aston Villa on Sunday.
"If you don't feel 10 feet tall leading the line and playing centre-forward for Everton then I don't know if you are ever going to feel 10 feet tall," he said.
"I wish I could do it now," he added. "I wish I could have that opportunity and I think the people on the street would love to do it as well.
"When you get chances in football, whether it be as a young player or whether it be a player who has been in and out of a team or whether it be a young manager given his chance at a club, you have to be ready to take them.
"You have to be ready and able. What is it they say? 'When you go on stage you have to have an act' and I think he has to go out there and show them what he can do."
Moyes has also urged the Goodison Park crowd to back Anichebe in the lone role that has now been thrust upon him.
He added: "The fans do understand the situation I am sure. I am sure there will be one or two who think we should probably be spending £15million on a striker like I would like to do as well but I think they need to understand we are not in that market.
"We have given Victor the opportunity now and he can now try and show what he can do."
