The second-seeded Scot needed just 51 minutes to claim a 6-2 6-2 victory against unseeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus.
His second-round foe at this indoor event will be Czech qualifier Lukas Dlouhy, a 7-5 (7/5) 6-4 winner over Pavel Chekhov on Tuesday.
Defending champion Mario Ancic also advanced to the second round on Tuesday with a 6-4 6-1 triumph over Nicolas Lapentti. The unseeded Croat has not won on Tour since claiming the third title of his career here a year ago.
Ancic has played well leading up to this event with quarter-final appearances in each of his last two events. Last week in Madrid, he upset world number seven James Blake in the second round before being ousted by Serbian star Novak Djokovic.
Fourth seed Potito Starace got all he could handle in his first-round encounter with unseeded Kristof Vliegen, eventually escaping with a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7/3) win.
The Italian will next play Mikhail Ledovskikh, also a winner on Tuesday.
Third seed Mikhail Youzhny was the only other seeded player in action, nailing down a 6-2 6-4 victory over unseeded American Justin Gimelstob. The 2004 champion at this event, the Russian will face Ancic in the second round.
Other first-round winners on Tuesday were Marin Cilic and Simone Bolelli. Cilic will face the winner of Wednesday's opening-round match between top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and Italy's Filippo Volandri.
The world's fourth-ranked player, Davydenko is seeking his second title of the season, having claimed his first title at the Kremlin Cup at Moscow earlier this month.
