Murray answers his critics

Andy Murray felt he answered his critics in the perfect way by winning his second title of the season at the Open 13 tournament in Marseille on Sunday.

The 20-year-old crashed out of the Australian Open in the first round last month and then angered many people, including his brother Jamie, by pulling out of Great Britain's Davis Cup tie in Argentina last weekend due to a knee injury.

Following his 6-3 6-4 victory over former world number seven Mario Ancic, he said: "I think a lot was made of me not doing so well in the Australian Open. But I have come back well from it and confidence is high, so that can only help."

He added: "It's great to have the confidence of winning two tournaments and beating some really tough players here and in Doha."

Murray has opted not to go for a third successive SAP Open title in San Jose this week and will instead play in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, which features five top-10 players.

The Scot is desperate to build on his title success by emulating Australian Open champion, and good friend, Novak Djokovic and making his breakthrough in the grand slams.

"At my age, someone like Novak Djokovic has played great in the last couple of years," said Murray. "But I've had some injury problems and if you look at the number of matches played and the number we've won, it's similar.

"(World number one) Roger Federer won here (Marseille) at 20 too so I'm on the right track. It's important to win these tournaments - it's what gives you confidence to go and play well in the Grand Slams.

"For me, winning Grand Slams is more important than being number one. Players are judged on how many they win - that's how good their career is. But if you are winning Grand Slams obviously you are pretty close to number one anyway.

"For me, I've always set goals for each year. First the top 100, then the top 20, then the top 10. Now it is a Grand Slam. If I can do that in the next couple of years then I'll be going for number one."
