Murray edges closer to top 10

Andy Murray moved to within touching distance of the world's top 10 on Monday despite ending a successful American hard-court campaign with the most comprehensive thrashing of his professional career.

Murray, who was confirmed at 11th in the latest ATP rankings, must lift himself from his 6-1 6-0 hammering by Novak Djokovic in time for Great Britain's Davis Cup clash with Holland which starts on Friday in Birmingham.

The 19-year-old Scot looked doubtful for the clash after plainly struggling with a groin injury against Djokovic, but captain John Lloyd has allayed fears about his possible withdrawal.

And Murray insists his defeat to Djokovic will do him good as it checks his seemingly irresistible progress and provides a good wake-up call ahead of the major challenges to come.

Murray said: "I guess it's going to happen at some stage in your career and I would rather it happened earlier so I can learn from it.

"You never want it to happen again but it is a good, humbling experience."

Murray jetted back from Miami after his loss in the Sony Ericsson Open and straight onto the practice courts at Roehampton, where he trained under the watchful eye of Lloyd.

Lloyd said: "Andy was keen to get on the court today and showed no real ill effects from the injury.

"There does not appear to be a major problem and he will join up with the rest of the team as scheduled."

Provided Murray is fully fit, captain Lloyd will be able to boast one of the strongest Great Britain teams for a number of years in the Euro-African Zone Group I clash, with a place in September's World Group play-offs at stake.
