Murray fit for Cup meet-up

Andy Murray will join up with the rest of the Great Britain Davis Cup squad in Birmingham after allaying fears that a groin injury could put his participation in the tie in doubt.

The 19-year-old Scot trained at Roehampton after returning from the United States, where he slid to an embarrassing 6-1 6-0 Sony Ericsson Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Captain John Lloyd said: "Andy was keen to get on the court and showed no real ill-effects from the injury. There does not appear to be a major problem and he will join up with the rest of the team as scheduled."

Murray is likely to lead his team into the tie as the world number 11, as he is expected to gain one more place in Monday's new ATP Tour rankings, taking him agonisingly close to the top 10.

Had Murray managed to overcome Djokovic, his friend and, increasingly, his nemesis, he would have been virtually guaranteed a top 10 slot. Murray admitted the experience of such a crushing defeat had left him chastened.

He added: "I guess it's going to happen at some stage in your career and I would rather it happened earlier so I can learn from it. You never want it to happen again, but it is a good humbling experience."

Provided Murray is fully fit, captain Lloyd will be able to boast one of the strongest Great Britain teams for a number of years against a Dutch side short on top-level stars.

Murray and the returning Tim Henman should be more than a match for their opponents while in Murray's elder brother Jamie, the nation can finally field at least one half of an elite doubles pairing.

There is now every hope Britain will avoid any embarrassing slip-ups and seal the tie inside the first two days, thereby securing their place in the World Group play-offs in September.
