Murray hopes high for US Open

Andy Murray has rocketed to sixth in the world, won his first Masters Series tournament and reached the quarter-finals of his last grand slam.

Up to this point, it has been the finest year of the 21-year-old Scot's burgeoning career. But Murray hopes there is even better to come, particularly with the US Open, his favourite grand slam, starting on Monday.

"I think it's time for me to go a little bit further," he said. "I have the potential to do that, but you try not to look so far ahead, go one match at a time, just see what happens because once you get into the second week (of the tournament) anything can happen."

Murray, who opens against Argentinian Sergio Roitman, won two early-season tournaments - in Qatar and Marseille, enjoyed his best clay-court season to date, then reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals, where he lost to Rafael Nadal, the eventual champion.

His summer saw even more improvement, including the Masters Series title in Cincinnati, where he defeated Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic for the second time in a week.

Despite a disappointing opening-round loss in the Beijing Olympics, Murray has remained confident, particularly since the New York grand slam is on his favourite surface.

The Scotsman added: "You have to go into, for me anyway, every tournament to win. I always feel if you set a goal to reach the third round, if you do make it to the third round, you almost are satisfied with what you achieved.

"Set the goal high and try your best to win the tournament."
