Murray out of New Haven event

Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven in a bid to be fully fit for the US Open.

The British number one had been granted a wild card for the event but has decided to rest instead following Tuesday night's hammering at the Cincinnati Masters.

Marcos Baghdatis powered to a convincing 6-1 6-2 first-round victory, ending the Scot's hopes of proving his fitness for next month's grand slam.

The 20-year-old again looked to be hampered by the wrist injury which has ruined his year and was not especially optimistic about his US Open chances.

He had planned to play in New Haven to continue his hurried preparations.

He said after his defeat to Baghdatis: "I decided after my matches last week and then a few days before the tournament here that I was going to try to hit some more (forehands) and, I hoped, be pain free - and I haven't had any bad reactions

"It was feeling better, and I guess it's pretty much 100% now. It's a good sign."
