Murray retains Masters chance

Andy Murray will face Fernando Verdasco in the final of the St Petersburg Open on Sunday after securing a 6-2 5-7 7-6 (7/1) victory over third seed Mikhail Youzhny.

The second-seeded Scot captured his second career title in February at San Jose, but has not won since suffering a wrist injury in May.

The 20-year-old missed more than two months with the injury, including the French Open and Wimbledon, and looked rusty when he returned in August.

A former top 10 player currently ranked 16th, Murray began building some momentum at the beginning of this month with a runner-up effort in Metz. He lost that that final to world number nine Tommy Robredo.

He will be the favourite in the final here however, as he faces 30th-ranked Verdasco.

The sixth-seeded Verdasco continued his strong play at this indoor carpet event with a 6-2 6-3 triumph over unseeded Marin Cilic in Saturday's other semi-final.

Verdasco has not been in an ATP championship match since July 2005 and his only career singles title came back in 2004 at Valencia.

The 23-year-old lost his only other meeting with Murray earlier this year in the second round of the Australian Open.

Cilic, who upset top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the second round, was denied a trip to what would have been his first ATP final.
