Murray secures semi-final spot

Andy Murray advanced to the semi-finals of the Open 13 tournament on Friday with a 7-5 7-6 (7/5) victory over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

The fourth seed, who opened his season with a win at Doha, is playing well in his first tournament since losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening round of the Australian Open last month.

The 20-year-old blasted 14 aces and won 38 of 48 points on serve against Mahut, who gave his best effort for the partisan French crowd at the hardcourt event.

Seeking his fifth singles title and second this season, Murray's semi-final opponent is eighth seed Paul-Henri Mathieu, who was a 6-3 6-4 winner over defending champion Gilles Simon.

The loss ended an impressive run by the unseeded Simon, who came into the clash on the back of a surprise victory over top seed and reigning Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic.

Sixth seed Marcos Baghdatis defeated third seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 in the bottom half of the draw to reach his 25th career semi-final.

His next opponent will be Croatian wild card Mario Ancic, who was a 6-3 6-7 (4/7) 6-2 winner over Sweden's Robin Soderling.

Ancic's run to the last four was highlighted by a first-round upset of seventh seed Tsonga.
